A man was arrested after attacking a driver with a knife because he forgot to use his turn signal in traffic, according to People magazine.

According to court documents obtained by the outlet, the suspect, Chad L. Norton, 28, allegedly cut off the victim in traffic before shouting: “You don’t know how to use your […] turn signal!” Later, the victim encountered Norton again and both stopped their vehicles before getting into an argument.

At that point, both men exited their vehicles. According to the victim, he managed to throw a few punches before being attacked by Norton with a knife. In the heat of the moment, he said he didn’t notice the injuries until he returned to his car.

The victim, who had his girlfriend in the passenger seat, drove himself to the hospital, where he received stitches for multiple puncture wounds and lacerations to his chest and arm. He filed a police report against Norton, which led to his arrest.

After being taken into custody, Norton allegedly told officers he did not remember pulling a knife but said he usually carries a folding knife and was trying to stab the victim’s hand to “get him away from me,” according to FOX6.

Court documents show that Norton pleaded not guilty during his arraignment on April 29 and waived his preliminary hearing, at which probable cause was found and the case was bound over for further proceedings. A status conference is scheduled for June 2.

Bail was set at $5,000, with conditions including no contact with the alleged victim and an order prohibiting Norton from possessing or controlling any weapons. If convicted, Norton could face more than 15 years in prison on the charge of aggravated assault.
